A written Research Article should typically be no more than 10 000 words. A multimedia Research Article should typically be no more than 60 minutes in duration.

Hypotheticals are short opinion pieces outlining a novel idea or hypothesis for testing, approximately equivalent to the Introduction and Aims/Hypotheses sections of a traditional research article.
A written Hypothetical should typically be no more than 2 000 words. A multimedia Hypothetical should typically be no more than 15 minutes in duration.

Preregistered Research Protocols are detailed plans of work to be done. They should include detailed aims, objectives, and hypotheses to be tested, as well as clear strategies for data collection and analysis to be carried out.
A written Preregistered Research Protocol should typically be no more than 3 000 words. A multimedia Preregsitered Research Protocol should typically be no more than 30 minutes in duration.

Preprints are articles that have not yet been peer-reviewed. Open Palaeontology can host preprints for all types of article that we published in peer-reviewed form.

Commetns are short papers directly responding to a peer-reviewed article.
Comments are only accepted as written documents and should typically be no more than 3 000 words. Multimedia Comments are not accepted.

Review articles synthesise existing research to reach new conclusions or make suggestions for future research directions.
A written Review article should typically be no more than 10 000 words. We do not generally consider primarily multimedia Review articles, but please contact the Editorial Board to discuss options.
